Would it be better to notch bottom end of joists or rip to dimension?
I’m replacing broken and water damaged joists in a old house I’m restoring. The joists I’m are full dimension 2X8′s. I will be buying 2X10′s and was wondering if I should rip them to 8″ or just notch the end where it’s supported? Do they make steel brackets that would support the notch?
A notched 2×10 would still be stronger than ripping it down to 2×8; but why do either?
If your existing joists are 2×8 then I don’t see the value of buying 2×10 replacements, especially since they’ll cost you more. If you want a stronger floor, you can double-up some or all of the joists (or sister them to the existing joists if they have any structural integrity left). I don’t know what lumber costs where you are, but in my neck of the woods, I could double-up every third joist with 2x8s and still pay less then I would for 2x10s. Your mileage may vary.
